Networking For Introverts

Have you ever entered a room filled with hundreds of people you have never met before and thought “why am I here, what do I say or do!” Your palms start to sweat and you slowly attempt to make a quick exit.

Believe it or not , you aren’t the only one in that room with the same feeling. Researchers estimate introverts make up to 50 percent of the population. So before you venture out into the networking world here are few tips and tricks to get you out of the shy mode and comfortable while you network.

Take your Networking to the web: Being in front of large crowds can be tough for any introvert. You don't necessarily have to network in person to be successful, with the help of our smart phones and tablets networking can happen from the comfort of your own couch! You can utilize apps such as LinkedIn and Facebook to build relationships or join an online Network After Work community to get you started. Once you master the art of networking online you can graduate to networking in person.

Start small: Ready to start networking in person but not a fan of big crowds yet? Thats ok, you don't have to immerse yourself in a large crowded setting in order to network and build amazing connections. Invite someone to join you for a cup of coffee or a group of people to join you for brunch. Whatever the activity is you can control the amount of people that make you the most comfortable. After you have done small groups a good amount of times you can then increase to larger networking events.

Rule of Two: If you're ready to dive into a larger scale networking event but are a bit nervous you can scale down the amount of people you want to meet for the night. Start off with using the rule of two. The rule of two sets you up to make connections with two people at an event. Thats it! This gives you the opportunity to make a connection with two people with out being overwhelmed with the rest of the crowd. Once these connections are made you are free to leave the event as you have reached your goal.

Smile: Not a man of many words?! Smile, it’s the most contagious thing you have. People are drawn to those who look friendly and inviting. You may not have to even be the conversation starter as you will attract people to you with your most powerful tool.

BE YOURSELF! One of the most important tips you will learn while networking. Networking is not about pitching a sale, its about forming long-lasting connections. The more people can relate to you as a person the more memorable you will be.

Just because you are an introvert doesn't mean you aren't capable of creating long-lasting relationships. Networking is everywhere and soon you'll understand what works best for you.

Happy Networking!
